The College of Nursing recognizes students’ needs to fit education into their already busy schedule. Distance learning courses offer students the opportunity to participate in coursework in a more flexible manner.
Distance learning classes are offered in two manners: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous classes allow users to participate in a live videoconference with the traditional on-site class from a remote site. Currently students from Marquette, Grand Rapids, and Macomb are taking part in these classes. Asynchronous classes are delivered to students through online web streams. Using a high speed Internet connection, students can view their instructors pre-recorded lecture on-demand.
The College of Nursing currently houses two distance learning, multimedia classrooms. These classrooms allow users to participate in multipoint videoconferencing sessions. In these sessions, users can share their presentation materials with all videoconference participants by using the computer source or the document camera. The classroom has microphones strategically placed throughout the room so that all attendants can converse seamlessly.

The College has also purchased a multimedia cart that acts as a mobile distance learning room. The cart can be placed into any general-purpose classroom and provides instructors and students with the same tools as the distance education classrooms.
The distance learning rooms and mobile cart are also integrated with Accordent video capture stations. These capture stations enable all events and presentations, including videoconferences, to be recorded. Recordings are then immediately available to view on demand via the College’s streaming web server. Links to the recordings are typically placed onto Blackboard for student access. Copies can also be burned to CD in the event that viewers will not have access to the Internet. MP3 versions (PodCasts) of the recordings are also made available for students to download to their MP3 player.
