Mission of the Center for Health Research
The Center for Health Research’s (CHR) was conceived in 1968 and has been a national leader in scholarly nursing inquiry ever since. The mission of the (CHR) is to enhance and extend the research activities of the College of Nursing (CON). The CHR focuses on nursing and health-related research for the purpose of advancing nursing knowledge and improving nursing, health and healthcare.
An integral part of the CHR mission is to facilitate interdisciplinary health research across diverse settings where nursing is practiced and healthcare is provided. Settings used to support nursing faculty’s involvement in health research include an extensive network of campus centers, community health care centers, worksites, churches, schools, and community service groups. Examples of some of the facilities providing superb support for faculty research include: the Wayne State University (WSU) Center for Urban African American Health (CUAAH); the WSU Institute of Gerontology (IOG); the WSU Center to Advance Palliative-Care Excellence (CAPEWAYNE); the Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS); and the Arab-American and Chaldean-American Council. Additionally the CON has established clinical research partnerships with the Detroit Medical Center, the Henry Ford Health Care System, the Trinity Healthcare System, and William Beaumont Hospitals—all providing a rich environment for those interested in clinical nursing research.
In pursuing its mission, the CHR seeks to help faculty and students produce the highest quality research and to obtain and expand external funding from both private and public sources. Support services of the CHR include: provision of administrative support for grants and scholarly activities, mentoring and training relative to the development of research skills, consultation on research design, data management and data analysis, assistance in developing collegial faculty-faculty and faculty-student collaborations, and provision of information about grant opportunities and guidelines.
