The College of Nursing has three faculty, Dr. Olivia G.M. Washington, Dr. Thomas Templin, and Dr. Feleta Wilson, serving as co-investigators on the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research (MCUAAAR) which promotes health research on minority elders, particularly African American elders, that will lead to the reduction and elimination of health disparities. Exemplars of MCUAAAR's efforts include a successful mentoring program focused on building a network of minority investigators who are committed to becoming productive scholars in the area of health and aging. The overall objective of the Center is to foster high quality scholarly and empirical training, research, and interventions focused upon health promotion and health among older racial and ethnic minority populations.

Dr. Olivia G.M. Washington is the leader of the Community Liaison Core http://www.mcuaaar.wayne.edu/clc.php.

Dr. Thomas Templin is one of three Methods and Measurement Core leaders http://www.mcuaaar.wayne.edu/methods.php.

Dr. Feleta Wilson is the WSU Investigator Core leader http://www.mcuaaar.wayne.edu/adminv.php.

MCUAAAR is one of six center grants on Minority Aging Research funded by the NIA. This particular center is a joint effort between Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, and includes several departments and colleges from both institutions. To date, 15 pilot investigation studies have been completed. The center sponsors a summer conference each year to help further educate junior faculty in the research process, research methods, and grant writing.
