Research Support Services
Major functions of the CHR faculty and staff includes: (a) pre-award support services including research grant planning and development, budget preparation, statistical consultation, presubmission reviews and grant submission; (b) post-award support services including facilitation of project start-up, and budget management assistance; (c) management of internal research funding processes; (d) dissemination of faculty and student research accomplishments; (e) facilitation of scholarly seminars and workshops throughout the year; and (f) consultation from visiting scholars, senior nurse researchers, statisticians, and editors.
The Associate Dean for Research/CHR Director (ADR), Nancy T. Artinian, provides leadership in advancing the College’s overall research and scholarship mission. The ADR works collaboratively with individual faculty members to facilitate the application for and conduct of externally funded research, and works to assist with college-wide research policy, planning, and coordination to further research funding growth. The ADR is available to: provide research mentorship of faculty including needs assessment and training; read proposals and provide feedback; help problem solve issues that may confront faculty in the conduct of their research; coordinate presubmission reviews of proposals; and advise on all aspects of grant administration [e.g., research team management, grant productivity, and Principal Investigators’ (PI) responsibilities to funding agencies]. The ADR also initiates and coordinates seminars and workshops to promote faculty development and interest in research. As Director of the Center for Health Research, the ADR oversees CHR’s involvement with sponsored programs, establishes and maintains contact with funding agencies, ensures that CHR resources to facilitate research are easily accessible and of high quality, oversees allocation of College research space, and coordinates and convenes the annual CON Research Day.
The CHR Research Administrator (RA), Donna Gardner, is the CHR link with the University’s Sponsored Program Administration (SPA), which in turn is the PI’s link with funding agencies’ requirements for fiscal management of grants. Faculty serving as PIs on their own grants and as Doctoral Student Sponsors on National Research Service Awards (NRSAs) work closely with the RA on the budget throughout the grant preparation process. The RA will prepare the budget and related financial paperwork necessary for grant proposals. Once awarded, the RA will coordinate fiscal post-award monitoring of account activity. The RA also oversees the hiring of grant personnel in cooperation with the Office of the Dean’s personnel manager, and oversees all charges to grants. In addition, the RA manages grant application preparation and the day-to-day activities of the Center. The RA creates and maintains procedures for the timely submission of grant applications, assists the PIs with the electronic submission of grant applications, assigns research space and arranges room key assignments. The RA communicates with faculty regarding CHR and University research programming, creates and maintains databases, creates CHR materials, maintains the CHR website and coordinates computer support through the IT Department. The RA also assists with the scheduling of pre-submission proposal reviews and the coordination of special events such as Research Day, CHR receptions, seminars, etc. and cultivates collaborative arrangements with HIC, SPA and OVPR.
The CHR Research Faculty Members are involved in the conduct of federally-funded research as PIs, co-investigators, methodologists, statisticians and critical reviewers. CON faculty may contact the Research Faculty (Drs. Nordstrom, Templin, or Yarandi) by voicemail or email; or drop by during posted consultation hours to discuss methodological and grantsmanship issues related to grant proposal development and grant award implementation. CON faculty members also are urged to engage them as data analysts and co-authors on data-based publications. Requests for consultation with Nurse Scientists (Drs. Campbell or Mood) may be made through the CHR Director.
The CHR employs part-time Research Assistants and Technicians who are available to provide support for research activities including grant writing and editing, literature reviews, data entry, and research poster preparation. New faculty with unfunded or minimally funded research upon which future external grant applications will be based should inquire about the internal sources of support for these services through the CHR Director.
