Research Support Services

Major functions of the CHR are to assist CON faculty with: (a) development of advanced grantsmanship skills, (b) formation of functional grant teams, (c) use of internal awards to launch programs of research efficiently, (d) preparation of competitive research grant submissions, and (e) fiscal management of research grant awards.

The Associate Dean for Research/CHR Director, Judith Floyd, is available to provide pre-award consultation regarding research team formation, access to University Grantsmanship Development Workshops, and College Mock Reviews.  Post-award consultation is also available regarding all aspect of grant administration [e.g., research team management, grant productivity, and Principal Investigators’ (PI) responsibilities to funding agencies].

The Senior Grants & Contracts Administrator (SGCA) is the CHR’s link with the University’s Sponsored Program Administration (SPA), which in turn is the PI’s link with funding agencies’ requirements for fiscal management of grants.  Faculty serving as PIs on their own grants and as Doctoral Student Sponsors on National Research Service Awards (NRSAs) work closely with the SGCA throughout the grant preparation process.  The SGCA will prepare the budget and related financial paperwork necessary for grant proposals and guide PIs through the process of submission through the University SPA office.  Once awarded, the SGCA will coordinate fiscal post-award monitoring of account activity and see that necessary research space is allocated to the PI and research team.

Awarded faculty and doctoral students will work with the Accounting Assistant (AA), Renita Mendoza, for purchasing issues related to grant accounts and indirect cost recovery accounts.  The AA processes purchase requisitions for grant expenses and reimbursement requests.  The AA receives invoices for payments to vendors, reconciles Pro-card activity, and processes travel expense reports for grant-related travel.  In addition, the AA handles petty cash vouchers and payments to mock reviewers.  Funded faculty will receive a monthly accounting report from the AA reflecting accounting activity for the previous month.  In addition, the AA will assist with locating information about costs of equipment that PIs need for budget justifications for new grant applications.

The Program Specialist, Victor Chuku, assists the CHR Director with the daily operation of the CHR, including the coordination of meetings, production of agendas, communication with PIs regarding CHR and University research programming, and the coordination of special events such as Research Day, CHR receptions, PI meetings and Weekly Grants Wrap-up meetings.

The CHR Research Faculty, Research Scientists and Research Associates are involved in the conduct of federally-funded research as PIs, Co-Investigators, and Data Analysts.  CON faculty may contact the Research Faculty (Drs. Nordstrom, Templin, or Yarandi) by voicemail or email; or drop by during posted consultation hours to discuss methodological and grantsmanship issues related to grant proposal development and grant award implementation, as well as engage them as data analysts and co-authors on data-based publications.  Requests for consultation with Nurse Scientists (Drs. Campbell or Mood) may be made through the CHR Director.

The CHR employs part-time Research Assistants and Technicians as available to provide support to CON faculty researchers, help support the Centers for Clinical Research at affiliated institutions with which the CHR has contractual relationships, and facilitate special projects undertaken by the CHR (e.g., Research Day, Mock Reviews, CHR publicity/publications, and Grants Wrap-Up).  CON faculty with grant monies allocated for specific services may contact these technicians for the following services:  the Graphics Research Technician, Mo’ath Bataineh, for assistance with poster design; the Data Entry Research Technician, Frank Thompson, to discuss data entry needs; the Qualitative Data Software Technician, Tracy Wunderlich, for assistance with analysis of qualitative data; and the Electronic Searches Technician, Liza Jenuwine, for assistance with literature reviews.  New faculty with unfunded or minimally funded research upon which future external grant applications will be based should inquire about the internal sources of support for these services through the SGCA.
