Center for Health Research

Greetings!

The research program of the Center for Health Research (CHR) focuses on nursing and health-related research, including interdisciplinary research, for the purpose of advancing nursing knowledge and improving nursing and health (Urban Health and Self-Care & Caregiving). Because the research objectives also target health needs of the urban community, the research agenda also advances the research programs of the University.

The CHR has been continuously chartered by the University Center and Institute Advisory Committee, the Academic Senate, and the Board of Governors since 1988.

The CHR has made steady and impressive progress in attracting increased financial support for its research programs. Current total funding is approximately $8 million.

The CHR supports the research efforts of all faculty in the College of Nursing. The research base of the CHR reflects a great deal of creative thinking and scholarly work on the part of many individuals. Our College of Nursing faculty, as well as faculty from across the University, participate in Mock Reviews, Principal Investigator meetings, and monthly research interest groups.

Currently, College of Nursing faculty and their research teams are studying such areas as how to help people with diabetes manage their own health care, how to help Arab American youth to stop smoking, how mothers with HIV/AIDS cope with their role as caregivers, how to encourage healthy lifestyles such as heart healthy diets and physical activity in African American and Hispanic populations, blood pressure telemonitoring in African Americans, exercise and sleep in menopausal women, enhancing cultural competence, improving cancer pain management in the home, reducing the effects of homelessness, and patient literacy levels.

Please explore our website and feel free to call us if you wish to explore research opportunities in the Center for Health Research.
