The Wayne State University College of Nursing, a Carnegie Research Productive institution, is internationally recognized for educating graduate and undergraduate students as practitioners and scholars who provide leadership for the nursing profession. The College is committed to research and scholarly activity that contributes to the body of knowledge of care and the human health experience in diverse environmental contexts. Established in 1945, the College of Nursing is consistently ranked among the top graduate schools of nursing in the nation (U.S. News & World Report), and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education. The College of Nursing offers programs leading to B.S.N., M.S.N., and Ph.D. in nursing degrees. The focal areas of research at the College are self-care and care giving and urban health. The College’s undergraduate program is ranked seventh in the nation in Gourman’s ratings of leading schools of nursing, and its doctoral program was rated fifth in a study by Analytics Analysis.
Within the baccalaureate program, options are available for applicants with diverse academic experience, including a traditional option for high school graduates, an accelerated option for college graduates with degrees in disciplines other than nursing, and an option for registered nurses. Graduates of the baccalaureate program are prepared for entry into professional practice.
An accelerated RN-M.S.N. program is available, to educate nurses to assume leadership roles as nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists. Within the M.S.N. program, students may study within the following areas of specialization: adult primary-care nursing; gerontological nurse practitioner studies; adult acute-care nursing; adult critical-care nursing; advanced practice nursing with women, neonates, children, and nurse midwifery; community health nursing; and psychiatric–mental health nurse practitioner studies.
The Ph.D. in nursing program is designed to prepare researchers and scholars who will provide leadership to the profession and discipline of nursing, the program emphasizes the development of the student’s capacity to make significant, original contributions to nursing knowledge. The curriculum focuses on scientific inquiry and consists of a series of nursing seminars that address research methods, knowledge development, and the substantive domains of the discipline. The courses are designed to enhance the ability of students to develop and test new or extant nursing theories and acquire skill in the use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Three optional paths toward the Ph.D. degree in nursing are offered: two paths for students entering the program with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and one path for those entering with a master’s degree in nursing.
The College of Nursing is affiliated with a wide variety of health-care agencies (approximately 100) within and outside metropolitan Detroit. These include major health-care agencies such as the Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System, St. John’s Health System, and the Oakland County Health Department as well as primary-care settings, ambulatory practice sites, schools, and community health centers.

Wayne State University is located in the cultural center of Detroit, within walking distance of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, Science Museum, International Institute, Museum of African American History, Detroit Medical Center, and the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. With easy access to numerous facilities by car or bus, students can enjoy the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows, and performances by well-known entertainers at the Fisher Theatre, the Fox Theatre, and the Masonic Temple Theatre. Historic Bricktown, lively Greektown, and the renowned Renaissance Center are also nearby.
