A bequest in your will or trust allows you to make a significant contribution that may not be possible during your lifetime. Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder, after all other provisions are specified. A bequest also can be established as a testamentary trust that provides income to your surviving spouse and/or other beneficiaries during their lifetimes, after which the remaining assets are given to the College.
Your bequest can be:
Unrestricted to meet the College's needs, as determined by the Dean, or
Restricted to be used according to your intentions. Some possibilities include: a particular program in the College, faculty or research support or for scholarships. Please consult with us so we can be sure we can fulfill your intent.
If you have already completed a will, a simple codicil can be used to add a gift for the College of Nursing. If you have not yet created a will, this homework, to ensure that your estate is handled according to your wishes, can be easily accomplished. Regardless of the size of your estate, a will is necessary. If you do not make your own plans, the laws of the State of Michigan will determine how your assets are distributed after your lifetime. Your plans can range from very simple to very complex, and drafting the plans can be quite inexpensive. (At the bottom of this document is language to take to your attorney for use in drafting your bequest.)
