The College's priority application deadline date for Fall 2008 is May 1st (March 1st for international applicants). Applications received after the priority deadline date will be considered if space and resources are available. If applicants wish to take any prerequisite courses during another semester, they can be taken in a non-degree status.
For Fall 2009, the application deadline for international applicants and those wishing to be considered for fellowships is February 1st. The final deadline is April 1st.
The Wayne State University Graduate Admissions Office Application Deadlines are listed here. Note that the university deadline is later than the college deadline. Those who must apply to the university as well as the college must meet the college deadline.
Applications will be reviewed after all required materials have been received and an interview has been conducted. The interview will be scheduled after the college application, goals statement and curriculum vita have been received. Special arrangements can be made for the interview if distance is an issue. After completion of the application process, the Doctoral Program Committee will make an admission decision.
Application Checklist
- Wayne State University Application for Graduate Admission
- Application fee, payable to Wayne State University, submitted with the University application
- College of Nursing Application for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions sent directly from the institution to Wayne State University and the College of Nursing

- An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report (General Test), taken within last five years, is recommended for applicants who have earned a minimum of a bachelor degree in nursing. Applicants may choose the GRE Exemption (admitted without the GRE score report) but they must submit an example of their writing for evaluation. The scholarly writing sample can be a published article or unpublished scholarly course paper. The writing sample should describe a problem or issue relevant to nursing, conceptualized and discussed in a logical and coherent manner, display evidence of creative thinking and the ability to synthesize ideas and draw conclusions from relevant literature. Further, if accepted into the DNP program, these applicants will be admitted to a probationary period of 12 credit hours. During this probationary period students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale overall. Those probationary students who do not maintain a B or better will be dismissed from the program.
- Applicants who have earned a master's degree in nursing need to provide a sample of scholarly writing, in English, instead of the GRE score report. The scholarly writing sample can be a master's thesis/project, a published article, or an unpublished scholarly paper. The writing sample should describe a problem or issue relevant to nursing, conceptualized and discussed in a logical and coherent manner, display evidence of creative thinking and the ability to synthesize ideas and draw conclusions from relevant literature.
- Three references from doctorally-prepared individuals, on forms provided
- Copy of current RN license
Applicants must have RN licensure in Michigan. The Michigan Board of Nursing requires international students without Michigan licensure to be evaluated or certified by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), in order to take the licensure examination (NCLEX-RN). Exam instructions are here.
