Wayne State College of Nursing

            Facts
  • Total 2008 fall enrollment to the College of Nursing: 709 students.
  • In response to the critical nursing shortage in Michigan and nationwide, the College of Nursing accepted 96 undergraduate students in Fall 2008.
  • However, applications for enrollment continue to rise at an astonishing rate. Although 96 new students were accepted last fall, more than 1,700 candidates applied.
  • The greatest need: more money to hire more faculty and establishing more endowed chairs to attract top educators. Because of the state-mandated 8-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio in the clinical environment, accepting more students to the College is an incremental process.
  • The College of Nursing is truly world-class education: Its graduate and undergraduate programs are consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of all nursing programs in America.
  • The College of Nursing doctoral program was ranked 5th in the nation in 2007 by Academic Analytics, a New York firm that measured actual faculty performance rather than institutional reputation. No other Michigan college or university ranked in the Top 10.
  • WSU College of Nursing graduates average a 96 percent first-time passing rate (three year average) for the mandatory NCLEX-R.N. (say “N-CLEX”) state licensure exam – 11 percent higher than the national average.
  • Economic impact: One out of every four nurses currently practicing in southeast Michigan graduated from the Wayne State University College of Nursing.
  • The College of Nursing was one of the first in the nation to offer an accelerated program for persons already holding an undergraduate degree in another field who want to become nurses. Our unique Second Career/Second Degree (CD2) program allows students to complete the nursing program in 16 months.
  • The College also is receiving $380,000 over 3 years from the U.S. Department of Education’s Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need program to provide tuition for graduate nursing students.
  • During the 2006-2007 academic year, the College of Nursing distributed more than $932,801 in financial aid to all its students. However, of the students that applied for financial aid, there was an unmet need of over $808,000.00.
  • WSU College of Nursing has been preparing highly trained nurses for clinical practice, educators and careers as scientists and educators for 64 years.
  • The College of Nursing Center for Health Research was the first of its kind and continues to promote and support nursing research.
  • The accelerated Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) program is the only one of its kind at any Michigan college or university.
  • The College of Nursing is home to a state of the art Distance Learning Center and High Technology Classrooms, the most modern and sophisticated instructional facilities on the Wayne State campus.
  • The Campus Health Center, the first on-site clinic at Wayne State University, is a nurse-managed facility operated by the non-profit Nursing Practice Corporation.
